What a way to end a trip

Okay, this wasn’t quite my last meal in Tokyo, but it was the last full day. We headed to Shibuya to do a bit of shopping and grab a bite to eat. We were looking over two noodle joints and decided to pick the one with the least people crowded around the machine to purchase the meal (but still packed with people). We were ushered to a table, and within a few minutes this steaming bowl of noodles was placed before me. Pork broth, pork, ramen, cabbage, seaweeds, scallions, and a couple of those oh-so-perfect Japanese eggs. I topped mine with a bit of pickled daikon and a few swirls of chili oil. Heaven in a bowl.

And we finally found a slice of Americana here in Tokyo. Chili cheeseburger for me, bacon burger for Raju. A San Diego micro brew, Tribe Called Quest, the War, Waylon Jennings, and Bruce Springsteen on the radio, and art of the American South on the walls. In a place named after a Jewish grandmother, Bubby’s. Hit the spot.

My go to meal at home has nothing on this bowl of chirashi I had yesterday for lunch. It had so much fish that I barely finished the bowl. A fine chiffonade of mitsuba toppedd the sushi rice underneath.

The English Rose

Yesterday we stopped into a tiny house along side the road near Nakijin-jo, which turned out to be an English tea room, decorated for Christmas. I think we’ve heard Christmas music nonstop since we arrived in Japan. Anyhow, the place also had udon, naan and Japanese curry, and pasta. I chose to have the linguine with clams, which I was afraid would be bland but was perfectly seasoned. It tasted of butter noodles and clam liquor. For dessert, a surprise of cakes with adzuki bean. Subtle yet the perfect ending to a meal.

On the hunt for noodles, we stumbled upon the Yak Yeti and decided to have curry, tandoori chicken, and Nepali noodles instead.
